There are special concerns about the effects of seizures on older people, especially tonic-clonic seizures. The body becomes less resilient with age, so the effects of tonic-clonic seizures can be more severe. They cause stress on the heart and can create potential problems for people with heart disease. Similarly, breathing is affected during a tonic-clonic seizure, which poses potential problems for people who have lung disorders. Bones also are more fragile in elderly people, so the risk of neck or back pain, or even a fracture, during a tonic-clonic seizure is increased. Despite these and other potential problems, many older people who suffer tonic-clonic or other seizures have no serious aftereffects.
